Joe Torre hammered a 2-2 pitching into the seats in
left center, a 3 run bomb in the bottom of the ninth inning of game 3,
to give the 1966 Atlanta Braves a stunning 6-5 comeback win over the
1961 St. Louis Cardinals. The win coupled with the game one victory gave
the lowly Braves the series, playing the spoiler role quite well.
The
Braves took the opener 3-1 behind Hank Fischer, despite being out hit
8-4. The Cardinals wasted several opportunities to get this one,
stranding 9 runners.
Sandwiched
in between the two Atlanta victories was Ray Sadecki’s second
consecutive complete game shutout. The lefty lowered his ERA to 2.54 and
improved to 4-1 on the year. Both shutouts ended in 3-0 scores, the
prior one being against the ’89 Cincinnati Reds.
The
Cardinals will close out the regular season with a big three game set
against the 1952 Phillies. The two teams have stayed close to each other
atop the NL East all season.
Atlanta
tangles with San Francisco in their season finale, again having the
opportunity to wreak havoc against a Giants team battling for a post
season berth.
